Jack had been at the cabin long enough to get his own set of chores. PJ, Brad, and Harry were more than happy to pass on most of the household work to him, despite his protests. He lived there, so he contributed to the household.

“I could find my own place in town,” Jack pointed out when PJ presented him with the list on Jack’s day off. Jack had planned to spend the day sleeping.

“You could,” PJ agreed.

Bastard!

Jack looked down at the list. “You want me to clean the cabin.”

“Just the downstairs and our rooms.” PJ sounded way too cheerful.

“You’re joking.”

PJ shook his head. “Do you want to chop wood?”

Of course Jack didn’t want to use the axe. He’d be more likely to chop his leg off.

Grumbling the whole way through, Jack worked through the cabin until he reached the top. He stripped the four beds and remade them with fresh linens. All the other bedrooms were ready for the brothers to come back.

The only room Jack hadn’t been in was the one down the end. Jack poked his head around and his jaw dropped open. This wasn’t a bedroom. It was a playroom, for little boys. He had never been in a room like it. All ideas of cleaning went out of his head as he looked around the room.

Toys were stored in boxes and put on the shelves. There was a large chair to sit in, just right for a Daddy and a boy. Most of the boxes were transparent and he could see cars and trains in them. But he went over to look at what was behind the cabinet doors.

He opened them up and stared, not quite believing his eyes. Diapers, sippy cups and pacifiers. He reached his hand out to touch them but pulled it back, knowing he wasn’t allowed to touch other people’s treasures.

“I wondered where you’d gone,” PJ said.
